Safelite AutoGlass Supports MaAfrika Tikkun
Safelite AutoGlass® is the United States’ leading provider of vehicle glass repair and replacement services. The company employs nearly 10,000 people and serves more than 4.5 million customers each year.
Safelite® is owned by Belron®, a multi-faceted vehicle glass and claims management service organization with a presence in 35 countries. Belron® has been a long-time supporter of South Africa’s charitable organization MaAfrika Tikkun.
Inspired by Belron’s participation in the annual London Triathlon as a fundraiser for MaAfrika Tikkun, Safelite® launched its own similar event in the Spring of 2010. The event was open to all Safelite® employees and took place in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The 2010 Safelite® Triathlon and Poker Run welcomed 115 triathlon and duathlon participants, 40 Poker Run participants, 20 volunteers and 107 guests, raising $230,000 for MaAfrika Tikkun.
Twenty participants – selected as highest fundraisers and best performers from 2010 Safelite Triathlon and Poker Run were then invited to the 2010 London Triathlon.
The check was received by a tearful Bertie Lubner, chairman of MaAfrika Tikkun who remarked, “You can´t understand what this check will do to help MaAfrika Tikkun.”
“Presenting our donation on behalf of our senior leaders, team members and incredibly generous associates, friends and family members was one of the highest honors I have ever had in my life,” said triathlon chairman and IT director Matt Weger. “Mr. Lubner’s reaction was amazing.”
Weger was deeply affected by the experience. “I was so honored that so many people supported us with donations of time and money to get us to that moment. I’m really proud that our efforts will go a long way toward helping people in need,” he said.
Weger and a team of Safelite® recently visited MaAfrika Tikkun. Everyone is invited to read about his experience at http://mattweger.blogspot.com.
The 2011 event has been expanded in terms of ways to increase participation and fundraising. The 2011 Safelite® will take place in April in Las Vegas once again and include:o An individual or team relay sprint triathlon (.75k swim/ 20k bike/ 5k run) o An individual or team relay sprint duathlon (5k run/ 20k bike/ 5k run) o A Charity Motorcycle Poker Run (200 miles, 5 stops)o A 5K Fun Walk (3.1 miles)o A Weight Loss Contest (weight will remain confidential)o On-site volunteer opportunities
Last year, the company had 250 participants who raised $230,000 and made a significant difference for children and families living in conditions difficult to understand. The goal this year is to reach 300 participants at $250,000.
